SPELLING BEE RULES AND PROCEDURES 2018. 4th EDITION



PROCEDURES


·  LEVEL 1

The first, and second rounds will include all spellers. During the first round the speller must spell the words given by the pronouncer, during the second round the speller must say the words the pronouncer spells.

The pronouncers will give each speller a word. The speller must pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it. 

The speller must spell, or say the word loudly enough for the judge to hear it.

The judges determine who continues to level two by identifying the spellers that did not make any mistakes during the first level.


·  LEVEL 2

Only the best spellers from level one take part of level two, and it goes as the first level.

·  FINAL


The fastest speller. The pronouncer will give the contestants a series of words to be spell during 45 seconds, the speller that spells more words during that time will be the “Hispano speller” a single mistake will eliminate the speller.




GENERAL RULES


·   The judges may disqualify a speller who ignores a request to start spelling. Once the speller pronounces the word, he/she has twenty seconds to spell it. The 20 seconds begin when the speller pronounces the word. The speller spells the word and then signals to the judges that he/she is done spelling by pronouncing the word again.

·  The role of the pronouncer is to correctly pronounce the word, and repeat it once if the spellers requires so. The role of the judges is to determine if the contestant has spelled the word correctly. The role of the speller is to spell the word correctly within the 20 seconds time period.

·   In the event that none of the spellers spells a word correctly during the round, all spellers in that round shall remain in the competition.

·   At the end of each level, the spellers who missed spelling most of the words leave the stage.


Disqualifications for reasons other than error, the judges will disqualify a speller...

(1) Who refuses a request to start spelling.
(2) Who does not approach the microphone when it is time to receive the word.
(3) Who does not comply with the eligibility requirements.
(4) Who engages in unsportsmanlike conduct.
(5) Who, in the process of retracing a spelling, alters the letters or sequence of letters from those first uttered.

(6) Who, in the process of spelling, utters unintelligible or nonsense sounds.
